Hmm…I guess I had pre-mourned him. I thought he died several years ago. A dobsonian was my first telescope, and would still be my recommendation for a visual (as opposed to photographic) observer. I once read something along the lines that Dobson considered Einstein to be a modern, secular prophet, and that his sidewalk astronomy campaign was his was to "keep Einstein alive."

Alway said I'd eventually get a Dobsonian around the 14" size, but never did. No mirrors for me at this point, but the scopes he inspired transformed the hobby. I did own a Newtonian on GEM, which was my first scope, which for those who don't know, differs only by the mount. A Dobsonian is infinitely easier to transport and set up.
