There is a far slipperier slope here than in the genetics thread. Hi Fitz: You can say that again. Heaven help the poor fool who publicly points out the statistical shortcomings of the parenting of any particular "low school performance" demographic groups. Anyway, I've not read the study, but I've looked at others and the academic success of kids seems to correlate most closely with the education level of the parents and of course the value the parents place on education. It's a values thing, not a genetic thing. Good ta cya again, Mr. Fish. :-) Yup, I agree profoundly with the above. Remembering as well how I was persecuted for being bookish and actually LIKING to do school stuff, I really think we can't pooh-pooh the effects of being labeled. Those labels stick, too. As a high school teacher when no one knew what caused AIDS, I remember so very well how overly straight a few debaters I coached played it, careful to talk during our drive back to school about what they and their girlfriends or boyfriends were doing the evening of a tournament day, Saturday. They were among the first to secure dates for the homecoming dances and prom, too. Had to make sure they were adequately "bearded" in time. Because a debate coach works so closely with only a few debaters in tiny high schools like that one, I knew who was gay and desperately faking straight of those who debated for all four years. A few, I became a confidant for, a "Sort of Mom," as one still calls me. They often struggled terribly to be able to focus upon performing well in school. I didn't worry as much about them, though, as I did about the ones I suspected were gay but who hadn't the drive to succeed or the parental support either one to any extent, the ones who sat quietly in speech or English class and seemed to want not to be noticed. That's why I think being labeled gay whether you are or not could drastically affect school performance.

Fortunately, the pervasiveness of harmful negative labeling and negative peer pressure of real or "suspected" LBGT kids seems to be trending in the right way, based upon my experience with the local public schools over the last 12 years or so anyway. I'm not minimizing the damage that bullying does, I'm merely expressing optimism that this particular type of bullying will decline to lesser significance over time, because our kid's attitudes are clearly changing no matter what prejudices their parents might hold. What does alcoholism have to do with homosexuality? I thought I was talking about genetics. Did we take a left turn somewhere?

What does alcoholism have to do with homosexuality? I thought I was talking about genetics. Did we take a left turn somewhere? You introduced alcoholism and genetics in the same sentence. Given how often you have started talking about alcoholism (and theft, murder and pedophilia) during discussions of homosexuality, the question is apropos.

This is football season and I expect to talk some serious smack with Steve in about 10 days. The new forum works great. Can't you see my mountains though? They're right there in the background. Jim

He introduced genetics and alcoholism in one fell swoop. You know Ken--he will get alcoholism (or theft or pedophilia or murder…) into most threads on homosexuality.
