For the first time in a long time, I find myself very close to being in agreement with a Pope.

This is really not news. The RCC has maintained for decades that we don't know how long a "day" is in God's terms, or it might be that the Genesis author simply wanted to put the story into a context that would emphasize God's might, hence, six days for the creation when it actually evolved over millions of years.
There hasn't been any argument with evolution by the RCC for some time; evolution merely explains the how after God kicked off the process with what is known as the Big Bang.

Dot,
That's true, but Pope Benny was a bit of a fundamentalist.

Actually, i ought to have said that the RCC really doesn't have an official position, only that God was involved somehow.
As far as I know, individual Catholics are free to decide what to believe about that, biblical creationism or a less structured form of creation. We just don't know to what extent God was directly involved is about as definite as the RCC gets although it seems more and more likely that God merely initiated the process somehow and established its governing principles. Evolution then proceeded from there. Some believe God still guides the process in some way, others do not.
