This is a tough one. Fans should boycott as they see fit. The press and political class should publicly denounce Stirling. The players and union should publicly denounce Stirling. The other owners, acting as the NBA should denounce Stirling and, assuming they have the authority, fine him. He has diminished the brand value of the entire league. I have not looked at the news yet today, maybe the league has already spoken.

I haven't been able to get excited about the NBA since the first Jordan three peat. They seem to have a rare talent for making basketball boring.
I think this one is largely on the players. A walkout/refusal to play until he is gone would receive public sympathy and have DS gone in about 3 days.

A walkout/refusal to play until he is gone would receive public sympathy and have DS gone in about 3 days. Looks like Sterling can be "fired", in effect. "Basketball Commissioner Adam Silver slapped Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling with a lifetime ban from the sport and a $2.5 million fine Tuesday over racist remarks attributed to Sterling. Silver said the National Basketball Association "will begin immediately" the process to force Sterling to sell the team, which he has owned since the 1980s. "Sentiments of this kind are contrary to the principles of inclusion and respect that form the foundation of our diverse, multicultural and multi-ethnic league," Silver said. Regardless of whether Sterling's views were expressed in private, "They are now public and they reflect his views." Sterling admitted it was his voice on the recording, Silver said. Asked whether the owner expressed any remorse for the comments, Silver said, "Mr. Sterling has not expressed those views directly to me." The fine is the maximum that can be imposed under NBA rules. Under the ban, Sterling can't go to games, attend practices, make decisions regarding the team or attend NBA meetings. And Silver said NBA owners are expected to provide the three-quarters vote needed to force Sterling to sell the team." CNN

Mark Cuban was already on camera with a "nuanced position", appealing to libertarian principle. I personally don't see it that way. Public reactions like this are rare displays of democracy, IMO. I don't support mob rule, but I tend to think that the populace lacks the energy to do this sort of thing every day.

If the reporting is correct and the other owners can force one of their own to sell with only a 3/4 vote, I think they will. Cuban is only one vote. I would expect that if the Commissioner is publicly starting the vote-out process, he at least thinks he has the votes. We'll see. What does this mean? "but I tend to think that the populace lacks the energy to do this sort of thing every day..." Your last line has genuinely confused me.

It means that I recognize that crowd think is not always positive. One can imagine cases where public pressure forces an unreasonable and hasty conclusion, even though I don't think this was one such case. Sterling got and will continue to get what's coming to him.
