Hardly. It is one of the noblest activities open to man. Can't you admit that you prophet said (or really, supposedly said) some things that were utter bullshit? Nope, as Muhammad(saws) did not address music very much. there was no definitive ruling as to if Music is or is not allowed. As you can see in the 2 fatwas I posted, it all comes down to the individual's own interpretation. Muhammad(saws) did not seem to see any issue about it. I personally feel music is a waste of time. But that is based on personal feelings flavored by my own bias of disliking music. I have never liked music and dreaded the weekly music classes in grade school. Hi Woodrowli: Your posts are a real education for me. Thanks! I agree with Flitz on the merits of this issue. Music is very important to me personally and it is one of my key relaxation outlets. Time spent with music is certainly, absolutely not wasted time! I am pretty sure that music was the original human art form and I also don't think it is too controversial to note that music is one of the primary glues that has bonded human society together since the creation/evolution of mankind. I don't have the anthropology chops to defend this position, but I don't think it is all that controversial. Calvin and the authors you quote (particularly the second one) seem to be against music simply because it is so enjoyable! I can't even begin to comprehend that point of view. I certainly feel that human creations of profound awe-inspiring beauty like great spiritual music (classical or folk of any culture) bring one closer to God rather than the opposite. Jim

If I am not mistaken, Calvin was against accompanying instruments, not music per SE. I get that there are some people who, like Woodrow, don't enjoy music at all, but when one starts making religious injunctions against it, one has crossed into the realm of crazy.

Jim Thank You Jim, The issue of Muslc for Muslim while controversial is not cut and dry. There are no written prhibitions for it in the Qur'an or Ahadith, but avoiding music (Instruements, not singing) was followed by the Sahabah as noted in the Sunnah. Also in none of the 4 Madhabs of Islamic Jurisprudence (Shariah) is music prohibited. Like many things that are not governed by Shariah, the prohibition of music becomes a matter of personal interpretation.
